What is the registration tag for?

The registration tag is a small token that is attached to your dog’s collar and it is proof that your pet is correctly registered with the City of Leipzig.

In Leipzig, dogs outside the home or enclosed property must have a valid and clearly visible registration tag. Violations can result in absurdly high fines.

The registration tag (Registriermarke) is also known as a dog licence tag (Steuermarke). You will receive it automatically after registering your dog with the City of Leipzig and paying the dog licence fee. Just like with yourself, there is a 14-day deadline to register dogs. Registration is done via the ‘Hundesteuer-Anmeldung’ (Dog Licence Registration) form. Fill it in and post it to:

Stadt Leipzig

Stadtkämmerei

Amt 20.31

04092 Leipzig

Alternatively, you can also return it to any Citizens Advice Bureau in Leipzig. You will find a list of them here.

Or you can fill it in online and submit it or send it by email to buergeramt@leipzig.de with the subject line ‘Hundesteuer’ (Dog licence).

You will receive the registration tag with the tax statement that arrives in the post.

If you move or any of your details changes, complete the Hundesteuer-Änderungsmitteilung (Dog Licence Amendment Notice) form. If you no longer have your dog or you leave the city completely, fill in the Hundesteuer-Abmeldung (Dog Licence Deregistration) form.

None of the forms are currently available in Ukrainian. If you need help, please contact the LHU Animal team.
