Usually, the entry regulations for pets (dogs, cats, ferrets) into the European Union are strictly controlled. However, due to the war in Ukraine, the EU Commission has temporarily relaxed the regulations for entry with pets from Ukraine.
Entry to Germany with pets from Ukraine is therefore currently allowed in general and requires no further measures.
Usually, entry with pets from non-listed third countries requires the following:
- Presenting an EU pet passport
- Microchip identification
- Valid vaccination protection against rabies (min. 21 days old)
- or the presentation of an antibody titer test for the measurement of rabies antibodies
Of course, it is understandable that the measures listed above cannot always be fulfilled prior to entry. Therefore, the regulations for entry with pets have currently been relaxed. However, it is only a matter of time until the regulations are tightened again.
The Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL) therefore requests that those travelling from Ukraine with pets contact the relevant Veterinary Office upon arrival in Germany to subsequently complete the measures specified for bringing pets into Germany.
In addition to registering with the Veterinary Office, a visit to the vet is also required. Here you will find a list of vets who will treat and vaccinate your pet at a reasonable price and issue you with an EU pet passport .
Furthermore, following your first visit to the authorities and arrival in your new place of residence, you should find out about local and state regulations regarding your pet on the website of the relevant Veterinary Office, during your visit to the vet, in the Animals Telegram chat or by talking to other pet owners. This includes topics such as the obligation to walk a dog on a lead, dog licence, listed dog breeds, breeding and much more.
