What is the Veterinäramt (Veterinary Office)?

In Germany, das Amt für Veterinärwesen (short: Veterinäramt), or the Office for Veterinary Affairs, is responsible for food monitoring and animal welfare. One of its primary functions is to fight and prevent disease. If animal welfare guidelines are violated, it can intervene and, after a thorough assessment, also remove an animal from a household.

If you entered Germany with a pet, it is advisable to declare your animal to the responsible Veterinary Office. Find out how to do that here. In exceptional cases, the office will assess your animal and recommend further measures where necessary.
